Seam Ripper Tales

If my seam ripper could talk, ohhh the stories it could tell! Whenever I’m sewing, I always keep her handy…because I always seem to need her assistance! I love my seam ripper, but I sure hate when I need to actually use it! Recently, I was making a book bag for my granddaughter, and I thought I would never set my seam ripper down and get back to sewing. I sewed the same two pieces together three different times and thought I would never get it right! Has this ever happened to you? I just kept making the same mistake over and over. And when that starts to happen, I know it’s time to stop and start fresh the next day. And, as usual, the next day I sewed those two pieces together the right way and I just have to say that there was no greater feeling of accomplishment than when I saw those two pieces sewn together correctly!! I hate to have to need her help, but I’m always so thankful and happy because when I use it, I can finish things the way they are meant to be finished. I may not always like having to depend on that tool, but my seam ripper is my best friend in the sewing room. Since I’ve taken up quilting, I have needed her more than ever before! Always seeming to need my seam ripper is sometimes a great mystery for me because I’ve been sewing for so many years and have tons of experience in alterations, garment making, sewing for home, and even special occasion fabrics…including the ones that everyone loves to hate(tulle, organza, slippery chiffons and satins of all kinds and weights). But, I’ll let you in on a secret…I’m a perfectionist…(shhhh, don’t tell! It’s a secret, to borrow the words of my youngest daughter)….being a perfectionist, I hate to have to need something that will correct my mistakes…HORRORS, 40 years of experience and I still make mistakes?! Every. Single. Time. And, that’s why I love my seam ripper because it’s such a great help…But I hate needing it, because it reminds me of how imperfect I am still…but if I want a great finish and a happy customer, I have to fix my mistakes and that is what my seam ripper helps me to do…take out what I did wrong and do it again the right way.

I hope you have enjoyed my little story about my relationship with my seam ripper. Do not ever feel like you have failed because you sewed something wrong…it’s only a fail if you give up…so get back in there with a fresh mind and get seam ripping and sewing!!
